Ich nenne mich ein Trekkie, aber gehe nicht zu Conventions. Ich habe auch keine Starfleet Uniform in mein Schrank. Und ich habe Wesley Crusher - wie viele anderen - gehasst. Nicht unbedingt Wil Wheaton, weil ich wusste dass er schon im "Stand by me" gespielt hat, aber er war egal für mich. Und dann habe ich ihn in meine neue Lieblingsserien wie Eureka und Big Bang Theory gesehen. Kurz darauf war ich auf seine Webseite/Blog, und lachte über seine selbst-ironischen Einträge.Es dauerte nicht lange, bis ich "Just a geek" gekauft habe, eine Sammlung von seine besten (Autobiografischen) Kurzgeschichten und ich war nicht enttäuscht. Wer allerdings eine trockene Biographie erwartet wird enttäuscht sein.Dieses Buch ist lustig durch und durch, und es ist etwas, womit ich als Geek mit gut identifizieren konnte. Aber fangen wir vorne an.Wil Wheaton schreibt gut, sehr gut. Er erzählt eine Geschichte, er zieht seine Leser(inne)n ein. "Wir" haben gemeinsamem Witze und Erlebnisse, ich nicke ab und zu mit mein Kopf, wenn ich was lese. Am Ende des Buches habe ich das Gefühl ob er meine Kumpel wäre. Nun ja, eine der Jungs von der PC-Klub oder von Dungeon and Dragons Spielgruppe.
Ich mochte Will Wheaton in seiner Rolle bei Star Trek. Durch Zufall bin ich über dieses Buch "gestolpert", und als ich es in den Händen hatte, konnte ich es nicht mehr weg legen.
Wirklich interessant zu lesen. Ist was für Fans. Man erfährt etwas über die Art und Weise wie man sich als Schauspieler so durchschlagen muss und das Wie und Warum es zu Wil's Wandlung vom Schauspieler zum Autor kam. Hauptsächlich aber um die persönlichen Gedanken, Selbstzweifel und Ängste.
Unlike so many Star Trek fans, I always loved Wesley Crusher. So when I found out that Wil Wheaton, who played Wesley, has a website, I had to go and check it out. I was pleasantly surprised to see what a funny guy Wil Wheaton is, and became addicted to his blog.This book is more than just a compilation of his best blogs, though. He explains exactly why he made the choice to leave Star Trek, to leave Hollywood, to go back, and to become a writer. His writing is honest, funny, and sometimes, heart wrenching.I read it in a matter of a day, and am sure that I'll read it again. Hey, at heart, I'm just a geek, too.

Gibt es einen Grund sich ein Buch zu kaufen, daß nicht den Anschein erweckt mehr zu sein als die Biographie eines erfolglosen Schauspielers, der einstmals in einer TV-Serie eine Figur spielte, die jeder zu hassen schien? Ja, weil es eben nur den Anschein erweckt. Wil Wheaton ist nicht Wesley Crusher, sondern ein talentierter Schriftsteller, dem es gelingt Erinnerungen an Episoden aus seinem Leben, von Kindheit bis zur jüngsten Zeit, teils amüsant und teils nachdenklich zu Papier zu bringen. Allerdings sollte man erwähnen, daß Teile des Werkes bereits auf der Website Wheatons veröffentlicht wurden, bzw. Teile seines Weblogs sind. Dennoch haben auch diese Auszüge einen Platz in "Just a Geek", werden sie doch sowohl kritisch als auch humorvoll in einer Retrospektive betrachtet. Wil Wheaton gelingt es sich, wie ein Phönix aus der Asche, als Autor aus dem Jammertal seiner "unglücklichen" Schauspielerkarriere zu erheben. Das Buch ist ein unterhaltsamer Lesespaß und auch die stetige Behandlung der "Wesley-Problematik" und die manchmal moralisierenden Texte sind nie ohne einen gewissen Humor. "Just a Geek" ist ein durchaus würdiger Nachfolger für Wheatons Erstlingswerk "Dancing Barefoot".
